On April 12, 2024, Kenya Railways, in collaboration with KLDA, organized a public participation session regarding the proposed Riruta Ngong railway line. Held at St. Christopher’s International School, Karen residents gathered to gain insights into the project’s intricacies. The presentation showcased the intended route of the meter-gauge railway and highlighted the areas and residents likely to be affected by its implementation. While acknowledging the potential benefits of reduced traffic congestion and enhanced transportation options, attendees expressed concerns about various aspects of the project.

Residents voiced reservations regarding the feasibility, operational logistics, and environmental impacts of the proposed railway line. Of particular concern were issues related to compensation for affected residents, the choice of gauge and fueling method, and potential noise pollution along the route. Questions were raised about the alignment of the project with the Nairobi Urban Development Plan of 2014 and whether comprehensive assessments of climate change impacts and environmental considerations had been conducted prior to public engagement. Additionally, stakeholders lamented the absence of key organizations such as the Kenya Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and Land Commission from the meeting, calling into question the thoroughness of the consultation process.

Despite recognizing the potential benefits of the Riruta Ngong railway project, Karen residents emphasized the importance of addressing their concerns and ensuring transparent communication throughout the planning and implementation phases. As discussions continue, stakeholders await clarification on funding sources, procurement processes, and the extent of consultation with affected property owners. Moving forward, residents seek reassurance that their voices will be heard, and their interests will be safeguarded as the project progresses.

There will be more clarity on the way forward regarding this project in the next public participation forum, and Karen residents want all their concerns addressed with details and evidence.
